We bought this guide not wanting to carry another physical guidebook for a one week trip to Vienna. Very disappointed after using one of the other DK products with the superficiality and poor writing quality of this guide, which has a minimal amount of information about a relatively small number of sites. Based on a read of the entire book in prep for the trip it seems like with its overly complex organization it would be hard to actually navigate, with a great deal of tiny text. We were hoping for more depth of info, not advice that particular sites or cafes were photagraphable/instagrammable!!! the image is of everyone coming back from Vienna with pictures of the same 10 things and eating in the same small group of restaurants. A feeble effort,

Paris has been my favourite city ever since my first visit there so it would be unlikely I thought that Vienna could be so good. But Vienna is wonderful too, in a very different way. What''s similar is an ordered city centre with beautiful buildings and royal palaces. There''s also the famous Spanish Riding School. We didn''t have the chance to view that as you had to book and we had only 3 days for everything in Vienna. However, we did visit the adjoining palace and other beautiful buildings.Yet more of these anyone can see on TV - in the ballet sequences that are performed for the famous New Year''s Day Concert with the Vienna Phil in the beautiful Golden Hall.

The old city wall was taken down and is now a ring road but very different to the frenetic near-motorway that''s the Peripherique round Paris. The Vienna ring road is just a road, wide in parts. Other fascinating places are of course the museums and the churches and the unusual St Stephen''s Cathedral. Close to the ring road is the beautiful Mozart theatre - tours take place inside the theatre. From there we took two bus trips, one for a boat trip on the Danube and the other to the edge of the Vienna Woods.

We stayed outside the centre in a pension that was once a convent and our bedroom was plain and simple but very large with a large vestibule. Nearby is the beautiful Schonbrun royal palace with extensive formal gardens and a little zoo, also a huge folly facing the back of the house below which they have summer concerts.

Visiting the royal palaces and seeing the general

I value all my Eyewitness Guides - and Insight Guides too. I always buy whichever of these is available for places we visit, they are simply invaluable, and also I buy them for places I hope to visit someday, or even just because I''m interested even if I never expect to get there. Compact but detailed, splendid maps, drawings, photographs, history, where to stay, restaurants, you name it, and a very good index. I wouldn''t go on any holiday, not even in Britain, without my Eyewitness or Insight Guide (or both).

This is an acceptable book to read at home with lots of photos and illustrations. However, this is not a useful book for the road. It''s heavy (for its size) and difficult to flip through. The maps are not easy to read and there are very limited practical information such as schedules, prices and transportation information. The writing is also extremely boring and uninspired. Am I suppose to be reading this while having afternoon tea??? Travel is suppose to be fun! I guess once a Rick Steve fan, always a Rick Steve fan. This is just not my type of travel book.

When did DK change the excellent quality format to this cheap paperback.
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2020
We have a whole showcase of DK guides and until now is the only travel guide we would use. However, I guess the publisher wants to make money. Be warned that this is not anything like the old format

Wherever I go to a city for the first time, I buy two books, the relevant Rough Guide and the appropriate DK Eyewitness Guide. The former I use for detail and the latter to set the scene and give the flavour of my destination. Hitherto, DK have done this in spades. Sumptuously illustrated, beautifully presented books with high production values for which I have been happy to pay a premium. Now this current guide is virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the pack. A cheap and nasty binding surrounding incredibly flimsy pages. The beautiful artwork and photography which normally grace DK''s products no longer glow on the page but lack contrast and are drab and dull. The usually extensive gazeteer is missing and advice on eating, drinking and places to stay is minimal to say the least. Take hotels for example: In the Stephansdom quarter one hotel is recommended, In the Hofburg quarter none is recommended, We draw another complete blank in the Schottenring and Alsergrund area and are back to one in the Museum and Town Hall quarter. The Opera and Nashmarkt apparently are hotel-less as is the Belvedere. So a guide which according to the blurb on the front purports to permit visitors to plan, discover and experience Vienna can only marshal a list of two possible places to stay in the entire city. In contrast, my DK guide to Prague (2016) lists eight PAGES of hotel listings. Yes I know about Trip Advisor but that''s no excuse for a GUIDE BOOK not to provide local insights into places to stay. As I turn to my bookshelves, I look fondly at my collection of travel guides. I have DK guides to Seville and Andalucia, Lisbon, Prague, Paris, Florence & Tuscany to name but a few. If DK don''t get their act together, I won''t be adding any more.

My wife and I have been to Vienna on many occasions, but I regularly update this guide (every few years anyway). As I said for my review of the Austrian Guide - we both love the DK layout, format and style, as well as the very good quality paper and standard of printing. If you are a stranger to Vienna - I can''t recommend this book highly enough - it will get you to just about anything you want to see:) I would just recommend the Popup maps as an additional purchase - fold away to a tiny size but incredibly useful. If you are a seasoned visitor, there is always something in this guide that you were unaware of - or had simply forgotten, and will be happily reminded. The only issue I would take with this edition of the Vienna Guide is that one of the walks that appeared in earlier editions has been left out - the walk down from Kahlenberg to Nussdorf. This is a wonderful walk whatever the season, and I can''t think why its been left out this year - definitely a mistake!

I really like these travel guides, for someone on a reasonable budget and interested in cultural and other standard "tourist", including walking, shoppping, eating/drinking out, etc and even business travel. Generally, I always buy one for the country/city I am going to visit. When I don''t have one, I usually regret it as I find I am "lost" without it in terms of planning what to do and how to do it! They provide interesting and practical facts about sightseeing, using the local public transport or driving, getting to/from airports, eating out, going out, shopping, useful maps of city centres, health and safety tips, some background history, etc. The translations (and pronunciation guide) of common phrases in the local language are useful but sometimes limited. Lots of colour pictures makes the book more interesting in itself and makes for a nice bookshelf souvenir afterwards. Another great thing about the series is that the books are always laid out in the same way. So once you start using them, you''ll always know what information you can find and where it will be in the book. A slight drawback is that the books are medium-size and can weigh from 500-800 grams (depending on which city/country the book is for), and the paperback versions always get a bit dog-eared being carried around in my day-pack. To paraphrase and old credit card ad: "I won''t leave home without one of these guide books".

I purchased another well-known guide before this and found the information too overwhelming to be able to plan a 4 day trip to Vienna. As anyone who has been to Vienna knows, there are enough palaces and museums to keep you occupied for a year. I needed a guide book that pointed out the main highlights that we could fit in over 4 days, and this guide book does exactly that. The laminated map is great, especially when you are trying to find directions in the rain, and we used it in conjunction with a popout map (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vienna-PopOut-Map-pocket-size-Footprint/dp/1845879376/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1400868860&sr=8-1&keywords=popout+map+vienna) to get around the city. p.s.. a lot of attractions in Vienna are open quiet late in the day (St Stephens open till 9:30 pm), so it is possible to pack a lot into the day. We also found a lot of the ticket offices open earlier than the attractions themselves, which is handy to beat the queues, and you can also book many of the tickets online.

whever I go somewhere new I will always look for the DK eyewitness without hesitation. I did in this instance but, in this case, was wrong to do so. The descriptions of places seem very vague and a bit distant, a lot of the photos are out of date and the book didn''t tell me enough about the city in general. ''Transport from the airport'' was especially vague, and didn''t even mention the best way of travel, the CAT (a double decker train), let alone tell you that it costs E.17 each way. It is as if the author hasn''t been to Vienna for a decade, and has lost touch with the place. The best two places we went to (over a long weekend) weren''t in the guidebook - the Terra-Aquarium, which is housed in what looks like an old municiple water tower (it looks derelict when you walk up to it, but really isn''t), and Hundertwasser''s KunstHausWein, which was well worth the trek to get there. Both of these places were within the map borders, but not mentioned anywhere in the text. Also, while telling you about the Chirstmas markets, it omits to tell you that they don''t open until well after midday, as do a lot of retail shops. The book does get two stars because the maps are flawless and highly informative. The few walking routes we did were well planned, though not all that informative. This is a good book, up to their usual visual and mapped standards, its the content that I''m really disappointed with!! If I go back to Vienna again, I will buy a different guidebook.
